Description
Garonne Canal de Garonne Baïse Lower Lot
In the middle of the 19th century several tributaries of the Garonne were still used as water transport routes. However most of these rivers were removed from the list of navigable waterways at the beginning of the 20th century and have only recently been restored in sections for recreational boaters.
The Lot for example is now navigable again as far as Villeneuve and the Baïse can once again be navigated as far as Valence. The Canal de Montech has also been rehabilitated and the town of Montauban now has a new inland port.
The current projects are being closely monitored by the Édition du Breil - especially as far as the Tarn is concerned. Near the town of Montauben a small section of this river is soon to be reopened. Although the lock leading onto the river is already in operation again some development work is still required before it can be used by ships.
