The region around Groningen consists of water and marshland as well as sand and moors lined with meadows and forests along the waterways. On the coast seals bask on the sandbanks and there is a feeling of spaciousness and unspoiltness. If you are drawn directly to Groningen after a trip through the former peat canals you will be greeted by a spirited city whose approximately 19000 inhabitants are considered the youngest urban population in the Netherlands. About a quarter of Groningens inhabitants have moved to the city to study so the town has numerous bars and a high diversity of restaurants.
